Abstract STEEL TREATING PROCESS FOR LOWERING GAS CONTENT OF STEEL IN WHICH CYCLE TIME IS MINIMIZED AND HEAT LOSS ELIMINATED UNTIL FINAL PORTION OF THE CYCLE. STEEL IS PRE-DEGASSED BY PURGING UNDER SUBSTANTIALLY ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS WHILE ADDING HEAT, PREFERABLY IN THE MELTING UNIT, AND THEN FINISH DEGASESD BY SUBJECTION TO A LOW ABSOLUTE VACUUM.
