Abstract A RANDOMLY ORIENTED METAL FIBRAL MASS IS AIR LAID AND BOUND ON AT LEAST ONE SURFACE BY REINFORCEMENT. THE POROSITY OR DENSITY OF THE FIBRIL MASS MAY BE PRESELECTED AS DESIRED. THE FIBRILS IN THE MASS AND THE FIBRILS ADJACENT THE REINFORCEMENT CAN BE ATTACHED AT THEIR CONTACT POINTS TO STREGTHEN THE COMPOSITE. A FLAT OR TUBULAR FILTER CAN BE FASHIONED FROM THE REINFORCEMENT. THE GENERAL METHOD FOR MAKING THE REINFORCED FIBRIL MASS UTILIZES TECHNIQUES WHICH PROVIDE FOR, AMONG OTHER THINGS, GRADED DENSITIES.
