Abstract MATERIALS SUCH AS CELLULOSIC TEXTILE MATERIALS ARE MADE FLAME-RETARDANT BY TREATING THEM WITH COMPOUNDS CONTAINING METHYLOL GROUPS, NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS. TYPICAL SUCH COMPOUNDS HAVE AT LEAST ONE RADICAL OF THE FORMULA: >N-CH2-P(=O)(-O-R5)2 WHEREIN R5 IS LOWER ALKYL. TYPICAL SUCH COMPOUNDS ALSO HAVE > NH GROUPS AND/OR AMINOMETHYLOL GROUPS OF THE FORMULA > NCH2OH.
