Abstract
Abstract A side looking sonar transmitter projects acoustic energy to sonify a certain area on the sea bottom. A receiver apparatus forms a plurality of receiver beams for receiving reflected projected acoustic energy from a plurality of adjacent receiver strips. A display apparatus is provided for portraying signals associated with these strips. The area portrayed is made equal to or less than the area sonified and the apparatus is utilized in a linear mode or a rotating mode.

Side looking sonar apparatus for use over a target area comprising: a. transmitter transducer means for projecting acoustic energy of a certain frequency and sonifying a portion of said target area; b. receiver means including receiver transducer means for forming multiple receiver beams, for receipt of said acoustic energy reflected from a minimum range out to a maximum range from multiple adjacent elongated receiver strips on said target area to provide corresponding output signals indicative thereof; c. the total area of said portion sonified in one acoustic projection being at least equal to the total area of all said receiver strips from said minimum range out to said maximum range; and d. display means responsive to said output signals for displaying as a function of time, an indication of said received acoustic energy from each said receiver strip.
