Abstract
Abstract A process for metallizing high purity ceramic parts and/or brazing a high purity ceramic part to a refractory metal part or another ceramic part using a ternary titanium, vanadium, and zirconium alloy is described. A particularly efficacious alloy comprising 21-42 percent titanium, 15-33 percent vanadium and 3654 percent zirconium yields hermetic seals when parts are bonded in accordance with the process described herein.

38 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said brazing alloy is formed in situ by providing a plurality of metallic shims which, upon heating to at least the liquidus temperature of said alloy, will form the desired alloy composition.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
61 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said ternary alloy has a composition within a triangle in a titanium-vanadium-zirconium ternary diagram, said triangle having corners at about 95 percent titanium, 2 percent vanadium and 3 percent zirconium; about 1 percent titanium, 50 percent vanadium and 49 percent zirconium; and about 1 percent titanium, 18 1/2 percent vanadium and 80 1/2 percent zirconium.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim

The process of claim 1 wherein said parts and said alloy are heated to at least 50*C above the alloy''s liquidus temperature.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
109 words
The process of hermetically sealing a high purity ceramic part to either another high purity ceramic part or a refractory metal part comprising positioning said high purity ceramic part and the part to be joined thereto adjacent each other with a ternary alloy comprising 21-42 percent titanium, 15-33 percent vanadium and 36-54 percent zirconium therebetween, heating said parts and said alloy to at least the liquidus temperature of said alloy, maintaining said parts and said alloy at said elevated temperature for a sufficeint period of time to braze said parts together and thereafter cooling the resultant brazed article which is characterized by a hermetic seal between the joined parts.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
12 words
The process of claim 6 wherein said alloy is formed in situ.

The process of claim 6 wherein said alloy is formed in situ by providing a plurality of metallic shims which, upon heating to at least the liquidus temperature of said alloy, will form the desired alloy composition.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
21 words
The process of claim 6 wherein said parts and said alloy are heated to approximately 200-450*C above the alloy''s liquidus temperature.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
203 words
A process of brazing a high purity ceramic part to either another high purity ceramic part or a refractory metal part comprising positioning said high purity ceramic part and the part to be joined thereto adjacent each other with a ternary alloy of titanium, vanadium and zirconium therebetween; said ternary alloy having a composition falling within a quadrilateral abcd in a titanium-vanadium-zirconium ternary diagram, said quadrilateral being defined by points a, b, c and d and the straight lines connecting adjacent points; point a having the composition about 42% titanium, 15 percent vanadium and 43 percent zirconium; point b having the composition about 26 percent titanium, 20 percent vanadium and 54 percent zirconium; point c having the composition about 21 percent titanium, 33 percent vanadium and 46 percent zirconium; and point d having the composition about 36 percent titanium, 28 percent vanadium and 36 percent zirconium; heating said parts and said alloy to at least the liquidus temperature of said alloy; maintaining said parts and said liquid alloy at at least the liquidus temperature for a Sufficient period of time to bond said parts together; and thereafter cooling the resultant brazed article which is characterized by a hermetic seal between the joined parts.
