Abstract

Abstract CONTAMINATING QUANTITIES OF C4+ HYDROCARBON POLYMERS ARE REMOVED FROM RECYCLE ETHYLENE IN THE PROCESS FOR CATALYTIC HYDRATION OF ETHYLENE BY (A) WASHING AT LEAST A PORTION OF THE TOTAL GASEOUS RECYCLE STREAM WITH AN AQUEOUS ABSORBANT IN A FIRST SCRUBBING ZONE TO PRODUCE A POLYMER-RICH ETHYLENE OVERHEAD, AND (B) SCRUBBING THE POLYMER-RICH ETHYLENE WITH A LEAN, HEAVY HYDROCARBON ABSORBANT IN A SECOND SCRUBBING ZONE TO PRODUCE AN ETHYLENE OVERHEAT SUBSTANTIALLY FREE OF POLYMERS.
