Abstract A PROCESS IS DISCLOSED FOR THE PREPARATION OF CARBOXYLATED AROMATIC COMPOUNDS BY THE REACTION OF SIMPLE OR SUBSTITUTED AROMATIC CHLORIDES, BROMIDES AND IODIDES, WITH CARBON MONOXIDE AND A COMPOUND CONTAINING ACTIVATED HYDROGEN SELECTED FROM THE CLASS CONSISTING OF WATER, ALCOHOLS AND AMINES, AND THE PRESENCE OF NICKEL-TETRACARBONYL, WHEREIN THE REACTION IS CARRIED OUT IN AN ORGANIC SOLVENT MEDIUM HAVING A HIGH DIELECTRIC CONSTANT, IN THE PRESENCE OF A BASIC COMPOUND, UNDER SUBSTANTIALLY AMBIENT PRESSURE, AND AT A TEMPERATURE BETWEEN 20* AND 130*C.
