Abstract

Abstract Complex cobalt carbonyl compounds containing a cobalt tetracarbonyl (Co(CO)4 ) anion are formed in the aqueous phase through the reaction of a cobalt material with carbon monoxide in the presence of hydrogen, a noble metal catalyst and a promoter. Useful promoters include alkali and alkaline earth metal compounds, in particular alkali and alkaline earth salts of weak acids, ammonium compounds, amine compounds and quaternary ammonium compounds. The complex cobalt carbonyl compounds thus formed can be converted to useful oxonation catalysts by contacting the same with a mineral acid.
