Abstract

Abstract A mechanical shaft seal having a primary face seal and a secondary internal seal wherein the seal line of the secondary seal is balanced in axial alignment with the primary face seal. The seal is a take-apart seal having a housing with a brazed-in internal radial step, the housing receiving a stepped adapter having a circumferential groove therein for the secondary seal and an axial end face adapted to hold the primary face seal. The adapter is axially movable in the housing and is urged out of the housing by a spring.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 394 words
A shaft seal comprising a substantially L-shaped crosssection ring housing having a radial wall and an axial wall, a spacer ring received in said housing, said spacer ring having a radial wall contacting the radial wall of the housing and an outer diameter wall contacting the axial wall of the housing, said spacer ring having an axial length less than the axial length of the axial wall of the housing, a multi-component seal assembly slidably mounted in said housing, said assembly having portions underlying the said spacer ring, said portions including a secondary seal, said assembly having an axial end terminating adjacent the end of the said axial wall of the said housing remote from the said radial wall, the said end of the said assembly carrying a primary seal member, a sealing face on said primary seal member projecting beyond the said end of the said assembly, the said secondary seal contacting the inner diameter of the said spacer ring, the said inner diameter of the said spacer ring axially aligned with a central portion of the said sealing face of the said primary seal, means retaining the said multi-component assembly within the said housing, spring means interposed between a portion of the said spacer ring and a portion of the said multi-component seal assembly urging the said seal assembly away from the said radial wall of the said housing, the primary seal being an axially urged space seal and the secondary seal being an O-ring received in a groove in a portion of the multi-component assembly positioned inwardly from the said spacer ring, the said assembly being axially movable with respect to the housing, and the said axial wall of the said housing extending beyond the said sealing face of the said primary seal and encompassing an abutment member received within the said housing, the axial end of the said axial wall of the said housing terminating in a radially inturned lip remote from the said radial wall, the said abutment member having a portion thereof extending radially beyond the inner diameter of the said inturned lip, the said abutment member being ring-shaped and having an internal dimension adapted to contact a shaft received through the said shaft seal, said abutment member having an axial end providing a radial face in contact with the sealing face of the said primary seal member.
