Abstract IN AN OPTICAL RANGING SYSTEM FOR LOCATING TARGETS BEYOND AN UNEVEN INTERFACE COMPRISING A PULSED LASER TRANSMITTER ALIGNED WITH AN OPTICAL RECEIVER, THE RETURN FROM CLOSE TARGETS IS REDUCED BY INCLUDING A SPATIAL FILTER HAVING A DENSE CENTRAL PORTION AT THE FOCAL PLANE OF AN OBJECTIVE LENS IN THE RECEIVER THEREBY REDUCING DYNAMIC RANGE AND PREVENTING RECEIVING SATURATION FROM VOLUMETRIC BACKSCATTER NEAR THE INTERFACE.
