Abstract

Abstract An input-output station for a remote time shared computer is described which has a high speed electronic printer output and a keyboard encoder input. The output from the keyboard is temporarily stored in a one character buffer which serves as the input to the electronic printer and to an accumulator register comprised of parallel MOS shift registers where an entire line of characters are stored as they are printed. Only after the accumulator is full does the station respond to a poll character from the central processing unit to send the data through a parallel-to-serial converter and over the data link to the computer. The input to the computer is at the maximum rate at which the data can be transmitted, thus occupying the computer for only a fraction of the time otherwise required for the operator to enter the data direct from the keyboard. Data sent from the computer is routed through the converter to the buffer and is printed out by the high speed electronic printer at the maximum rate. This system provides for most efficient use of the computer by the input-output stations.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 210 words
In an electronic device for printing on a sheet of recording medium, the combination of: support means for supporting the sheet of recording medium, carriage means, an electronic printhead mounted on the carriage means, guide means for guiding the carriage means such that the printhead is movable past a plurality of printing positions on the sheet of recording medium, a motor having a plurality of windings each positioned to rotate the shaft of the motor to a predetermined angular position when energized and coupled to move the carriage means along the guide means as the windings are successively energized, counter means for counting a logic clocking signal, first logic means for energizing the windings of the motor in a sequence determined by the count of the counter, said first logic means including means for open circuiting all of the motor windings in response to a return carriage logic signal, spring means for returning the carriage means to a reference position when the motor windings are open circuited, and second logic means for, in response to a print strobe, first producing a print signal for operating the electronic printhead to print a character and then clocking the counter to energize the next successive winding of the motor and advance the carriage.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 210 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 57 words
The combination defined in claim 1 wherein: the counter has a logically controllable count-in-reverse mode, and further characterized by third logic means for, in response to a back space logic signal, applying a logic signal to cause the counter to operate in the count-in-reverse mode and for disabling the second logic means from producing a print signal.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 102 words
The combination defined in claim 1 wherein: the support means includes means for advancing the sheet of recording medium, and further characterized by a second motor having a plurality of windings each positioned to rotate the shaft of the motor to a predetermined angular position when energized, the second motor being coupled to drive the means for advancing the sheet of recording medium, and third logic means for energizing the windings of the second motor in a predetermined sequence to advance the sheet of recording medium one line in response to a carriage return logic signal or a new line logic signal.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 38 words
The combination defined by claim 1 wherein said electronic printhead comprises a thermal printing matrix bonded to said carriage means, said carriage means having a heat sink portion for the dissipation of heat from said thermal printing matrix.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 38 words
The combination defined by claim 1 further comprising third logic means responsive to an upper case signal or lower case signal for applying to a character generator a signal indicative of the case of characters to be generated.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 58 words
The combination defined by claim 1 further comprising second carriage means having a pressure pad mounted thereon which establishes mating contact with the electronic printhead, said second carriage means being movably mounted on a second guide means and coupled to said motor to be moved alOng the second guide means as the electronic printhead carriage means is moved.
