Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 117 words
Apparatus for use in a continuous casting system including a casting mold for continuously casting an ingot of solid cross section and means for pulling the cast ingot downwardly through the mold, said apparatus comprising, a plug having a solid cross section less than the cross section of the casting mold, means for supporting said plug above the casting mold aligned substantially with the longitudinal axis thereof, means for moving said plug reciprocally to repeatedly engage and disengage the central region of the molten pool at the top of the ingot in the casting mold, and means for removing heat from said plug to cool the ingot being cast in the mold in the central region thereof.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 117 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the lower end of said plug has a conical surface.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said heat removing means comprise means for circulating a fluid coolant in contact with said plug.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 72 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said moving means include a reciprocable hydraulic cylinder, means for sensing a rise in pressure in the upper part of said cylinder to a predetermined level in response to resistance to movement of said plug exerted by the ingot, and means responsive to the sensing of the predetermined pressure for stopping said plug and for reversing the action of said cylinder after a predetermined time delay.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 55 words
Apparatus according to claim 4 wherein said moving means include a limit switch positioned to be actuated upon a rise of said plug to a predetermined upper position, and means responsive to the actuation of said limit switch for stopping said plug and for reversing the action of said cylinder after a predetermined time delay.
