Abstract THIS INVENTION IS CONCERNED WITH DETERGENT COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING COLLOIDAL SILICA TO ENHANCE THEIR CLEANING AND SOIL REMOVAL ABILITY. THE COLLOIDAL SILICA IS FORMED IN SITU AS A SOL BY THE REACTION OF WATER-SOLUBLE OR DISPERSIBLE ALKALI SILICATES WITH A VARIETY OF ANIONIC, DETERGENT-FORMING ORGANIC ACIDS, EXEMPLIEIED BY FATTY ACIDS OF FROM EIGHT TO TWELVE CARBON ATOMS OR ALKYL SULFONIC ACIDS. THE COLLOIDAL SILICA IS CHARACTERIZED BY AN ALKALINE OXIDE TO SIO2 RATIO OF FROM 1:4 TO 1:2000 OR MORE.
