Abstract A REFRACTORY METAL BONDED CARBONITRIDE ALLOY IS DISCLOSED FOR USE AS CUTTING TOOLS AND IN OTHER APPLICATIONS WHERE HARDNESS AND ABRASION RESISTANCE ARE REQUIRED. THE MICROSTRUCTURE OF THE ALLOYS CONSISTS OF FINE-GRAINED, MECHANICAL MIXTURES OF CARBONITRIDE AND REFRACTORY METAL ALLOYS, THE FINE-GRAINED STRUCTURE BEING OBTAINED THROUGH SOLIDIFICATION OF CUTECTIC OR NEAR-EUTECTIC METALS. IN THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT THE HARD CARBONITRIDE PHASE HAS TITANIUM AS ITS BASE METAL, WHILE THE BINDER PHASE IS A TUNGSTEN-RICH METAL ALLOY.
