Abstract PLASTIC ARTICLES ARE PROVIDED WITH SUB-SURFACE MARKINGS WHICH ARE SCUFF-PROOF AND RESISTANT TO ACID, ALKALI AND SOLVENT ATTACK. DYE-BEARING COMPOSITIONS ARE APPLIED TO A PLASTIC SURFACE IN A DESIRED PATTERN; SURFACE AND DYEBEARING COMPOSITION ARE THEN SUITABLY PROCESSED TO EFFECTUATE A DIFFUSION OF THE DYE INTO THE SURFACE AND THE RESIDUAL COMPOSITION IS REMOVED FROM THE SURFACE, THEREBY RESULTING IN A DURABLE AND RESISTANT SUB-SURFACE PATTERN.
