Abstract

Abstract A double end terminal attachment machine constituting an improvement over one of the devices disclosed and claimed in U. S. Pat. No. 3,267,556 wherein there is a feed wheel having its own separate torque motor. Wire is propelled about the feed wheel to the clutch wheel and the wire is then propelled about the clutch wheel and downstream toward the terminal affixing components of the machine. The variable drive of the feed wheel is achieved through the provision of two trunnions which act individually and together to slow down the action of the feed wheel, stop the feed wheel, allow it to move somewhat forwardly, then reverse it for a very short period and start the feed wheel moving again to propel wire forwardly to the clutch wheel which operates at a constant speed except that it is shut off from the time the forward motion of the feed wheel stops until the time as the reversing action of the feed wheel has been completed. The foregoing action produces a sufficient delay in the operation of the feed wheel so that the terminal affixing mechanism of U.S. Pat. No. 3,267,556 can become operative and complete its function. By virtue of the interposition of the second trunnion the wire is gripped when it is stationary, and this gives rise to an improvement in accuracy and achieving a more precise length of cut, stripped and terminated wire.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 75 words
In a double end terminal attachment device comprising variable driven feed wheel means for propelling wire past a cutting and stripping station, the improvement comprising interposing clutch wheel means downstream of said feed wheel means such that the wire propelled by said feed wheel means is delivered to said clutch wheel means which in turn propel said wire downstream toward a cutting and stripping station, said clutch wheel means being intermittently driven at constant speed.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 75 words
In a double end terminal attachment device comprising variable driven feed wheel means for propelling wire past a cutting and stripping station, the improvement comprising interposing clutch wheel means downstream of said feed wheel means such that the wire propelled by said feed wheel means is delivered to said clutch wheel means which in turn propel said wire downstream toward a cutting and stripping station, said clutch wheel means being intermittently driven at constant speed.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 44 words
The double end terminal attachment device of claim 1 wherein first and second trunnion means are provided to slow down and temporarily stop said feed wheel means, with means being provided to stop said clutch wheel means when said feed wheel means are stopped.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 69 words
The dOuble end terminal attachment device of claim 2 wherein said first and second trunnion means interact to permit said feed wheel means to be driven forwardly for a short period of time while said clutch wheel means remain stopped with said first and second trunnion means then causing said feed wheel means to reverse for an even shorter period of time while said clutch wheel means remain stopped.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 50 words
The double end terminal attachment device of claim 3 wherein said first and second trunnion means further interact to allow said feed wheel means again to be driven forwardly and means to turn said clutch wheel means on when said feed wheel means are driven forwardly for the next cycle.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 203 words
The double end terminal attachment device of claim 4 wherein said clutch wheel means pushes a predetermined length of wire through guide means and past a wire severing and insulation stripping station when said guide means are extended past said station, means to cut said wire at said wire severing station, the severed length of wire being designated the downstream wire and the wire still connected back to said clutch wheel means being designated the upstream wire, said guide means being reciprocable and being retractable beyond said wire severing and insulation stripping station, prior to actuation of said severing and stripping station, means for moving said severing means away from said wire after it has been severed, means to cut the insulation on the severed end of both the upstream and downstream wires, stripper gripper means for advancing the downstream wire to pull the insulation off its severed end and to deposit the downstream wire in conveyor gripper means which transfer the cut and stripped downstream wire toward a terminal affixing station and feeder gripper means for advancing the upstream wire to pull the insulation off its severed end and to deliver the downstream end of the upstream wire to terminal affixing means.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
The double end terminal attachment device of claim 5 wherein said conveyor gripper means are in the open position during the feeding of said wire and during the stripping of said wire.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 22 words
The double end terminal attachment device of claim 5 wherein said feeder gripper means act substantially simultaneously with said stripper gripper means.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 34 words
The double end terminal attachment device of claim 5 wherein said feeder gripper includes means to retract axially and means to pivot toward a terminal affixing station upon completion of the axial stripping action.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 33 words
The double end terminal attachment device of claim 5 wherein said feeder gripper means are open during the feeding of said wire and closed about the same time as said stripper gripper closes.
