Abstract WHEREIN R1 stands for hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical; R2 stands for hydrogen, a lower alkyl radical, hydroxyl group, a halogen atom, a lower alkoxy radical, an amino radical or a lower alkylthio radical; R3 stands for hydrogen, a lower alkyl radical, hydroxyl group, a lower alkoxy radical, a lower alkylthio radical or a radical represented by the formula (WHEREIN R'' stands for hydrogen, an alkyl radical, a cycloalkyl radical, an amino radical, a hydroxyalkyl group or an alkyl substituted amino alkyl radical, and R'''' stands for hydrogen or an alkyl radical, R'' and R'''' may be the same or a different radical and R'' and R'''' may bond together to form a 5- or 6membered heterocyclic ring containing a nitrogen hetero atom); and R4 stands for hydrogen or an alkyl group. Such derivatives are useful as antibacterial agents. A 5,8-dihydro-5-oxopyrido (2,3-d) pyrimidine derivative represented by the following formula
