Abstract

Abstract There is provided a process for treating municipal solid waste or the like characterized by disposing such material as a burden on a traveling grate, passing hot gases through the burden to carbonize carbonizable fractions thereof, and separating gasentrained materials, e.g. water and organic materials, from the gases issuing from the burden. The unvolatilized solid material is composed largely of glass and metallics which may be further processed as desired. The process is characterized in that it is adaptable to continuous treatment of solid waste material, e.g. rubbish.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 43 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 in which a portion of the gas passed through the drying zone is recycled from the carbonizing zone and the balance is recycled from the drying zone after mixing with the portion from the carbonizing zone.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 38 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 which is additionally characterized by the introduction of air into the gases passing through the carbonizing zone to promote combustion of a portion of the carbon formed in the carbonizing zone.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the plane of the grate is horizontally disposed.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the burden moves along a circular path.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the burden moves along a linear path.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
A process in accordance with claim 4 in which the heated gas is passed downwardly through the burden.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 34 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 in which the gas passed through the cooling zone is passed in a direction opposite to the direction of the heated gas passed through the carbonizing zone.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 in which the hot gases are chemically reducing.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 24 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 in which the separation of gas-entrained material is effected by cooling the gas to liquefy condensable material.
