Abstract

Abstract A method of coating a moving metal surface comprising forming a dry layer of metallic powder on the surface, thereafter applying an aqueous liquid of a substance which gels when suitably hydrated to the said layer and allowing the water to penetrate the metallic powder layer, and then passing the metallic powder layer against a compression roller to compact the powder to the said surface, the said liquid acting to reduce the extent to which the roller dislodges the powder.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 38 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the said surface is the surface of a moving metal strip, the powder being compacted by passing the strip through the nip of a pair of co-operating said compression rollers.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 23 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 comprising drying the layer after the liquid is applied, before passing it against the said roller.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the said liquid is an aqueous colloidal solution.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
A method of coating as claimed in claim 4 in which the liquid is an aqueous colloidal cellulosic solution.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 21 words
A method of coating as claimed in claim 5 wherein the liquid is an aqueous solution containing sodium carboxy methyl cellulose.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 32 words
A method as claimed in claim 6 wherein the concentration of the sodium carboxy methyl cellulose in the solution is not less than 0.05 percent nor more than 0.6 percent by weight.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method as claimed in claim 7 wherein the said concentration is not less than 0.2 percent nor more than 0.4 percent.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein the solution contains starch, at a concentration between 0.2 and 1 percent by weight.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 28 words
A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein the solution contains bentonite at a concentration of not less than 0.5 percent nor more than 2 percent by weight.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 29 words
A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein the solution contains aluminum hydroxide at a concentration of not less than 0.05 percent nor more than 1 percent by weight.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 29 words
A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein the solution contains nickel hydroxide at a concentration of not less than 0.05 percent nor more than 1 percent by weight.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 29 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the liquid is applied to the surface at a rate between 2 and 4 cubic centimeters per square foot of surface.
