Abstract Homogeneous non-porous compositions having an average grain size of less than about 10 microns, a density in excess of 95 percent of theoretical and consisting essentially of 1. 10 TO 50 VOLUME PERCENT OF ALUMINA, ZIRCONIA OR THEIR MIXTURES; AND 2. 50 TO 90 VOLUME PERCENT OF A NITRIDE OF TITANIUM, TANTALUM, ZIRCONIUM, HAFNIUM OR THEIR MIXTURES; DEMONSTRATE UNUSUAL RESISTANCE TO FRICTIONAL WEAR AND CHEMICAL ATTACK.
