Abstract
Abstract The carrier lever of the ribbon fork is mounted on a control shaft to which a control lever is secured. The carrier lever and control lever have slots through which a rod operated by the universal bar of the typewriter passes. The shape of the slots is selected so that in accordance with the set angular position of the control shaft, the ribbon fork is raised from an inoperative position to at least one operative position, and then locked when the rod passes through parallel slot portions.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
257 words
In combination with a typewriter including a universal bar, a ribbon fork actuating and locking device comprising a ribbon fork; carrier means connected with said ribbon fork for movement with said ribbon fork between an inoperative position and at least one operative position, said carrier means being formed with a first guideway; control means formed with a second guideway having a drive portion transverse to said first guideway, and a locking portion parallel with said first guideway; connecting slide means connected with said universal bar and operated by said universal bar between a normal position and an actuated position; and setting means for setting said control means between a locking position in which said connecting slide means in said normal position is located in said parallel locking portion and first guideway so that said carrier means and ribbon fork are locked in said inoperative position and remain locked in said inoperative position during movement of said connecting slide means to said actuated position, and at least one driving position in which said connecting slide means in said normal position is located in said transverse drive portion and in said first guideway so that said carrier means and said ribbon fork are moved to said operative position during movement of said connecting slide means in said transverse drive portion and in said first guideway toward said actuated position until said connecting slide means enters said locking portion while continuing movement in said first guideway whereby said carrier means and said ribbon fork are locked in said operative position.

Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
57 words
A device as claimed in claim 1 comprising means supporting said carrier means and said control means for relative movement about a common axis; wherein said drive portion of said second guideway is circular and has a center located in said axis; and wherein said locking portion of said second guideway and said first guideway are straight.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
105 words
A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein said control means include a control shaft supported for angular movement about an axis and a control lever secured to said control shaft and being formed with said second guideway; wherein said drive portion of said second guideway is circular and has a center located in said axis; and wherein said carrier means include a carrier lever mounted on said control shaft for angular movement about said axis and having said first guideway; wherein said first and second guideways are slots, and wherein said locking portion of said second guideway and said first guideway are straight slots.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
46 words
A device as claimed in claim 3 wherein said connecting slide means include a straight rod fitting into said slots and being parallel with said axis, a link pivotally connected with said rod, and lever means pivotally connected with said link and with said universal bar.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
27 words
A device as claimed in claim 4 including spring means connecting said rod with said control lever and biassing said connecting slide means toward said normal position.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
70 words
A device as claimed in claim 3 wherein said setting means include a manually operable setting member secured to said control shaft for angular movement and having at least first and second arresting recesses, and resilient catch means cooperating with said arresting recesses in different angular positions of said control shaft for arresting said control shaft with said control lever in said locking and driving positions of said control means.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
85 words
A device as claimed in claim 1 comprising supporting means; wherein said control means includes a control shaft mounted on said supporting means for angular movement, and a control member having said second guideway and being secured to said control shaft; wherein said carrier means includes a carrier member having said first guideway and mounted on said control shaft for angular movement about the axis of said control shaft so that said control member and said carrier member move in First and second parallel planes.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
25 words
A device as claimed in claim 7 wherein said drive portion of said second guideway is part-circular and has a center located in said axis.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
116 words
A device as claimed in claim 7 wherein said carrier member is an angular carrier lever having one arm formed with said first guideway and another arm supporting said ribbon fork; wherein said control member is an angular control lever having one arm formed with said second guideway and being substantially parallel with said one arm of said angular carrier lever, and an other arm secured to said control shaft; wherein said first and second guideways are slots; and wherein said connecting slide means include a rod parallel to said axis and located in said slots slidably mounted in said slots, and a spring connecting said rod with said other arm of said angular control lever.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
145 words
A device as claimed in claim 7 wherein said connecting slide means include a straight rod located in a third plane perpendicular to said first and second planes and parallel to said axis of said control shaft, said rod passing through said first and second guideways so that said locking portion of said second guideway and said first guideway are located in said third plane when said control means is in said locking position and said carrier means is in said inoperative position; and wherein said second guideway is displaced relative to said rod in said normal position, and to said carrier means and first guideway when said setting means is set to said driving position; and wherein said locking portion is again located in said third plane when said rod enters said locking portion after passing through said drive portion of said second guideway.
