Abstract

Abstract To form a web of papermaking fibers in the process of papermaking, a suspension of such fibers is passed from a head box between a pair of endless fabrics, at least one of which is a foraminous forming carrier. The fabrics are moved over paths formed by head box walls which have respective facing surfaces which are substantially impervious and which are substantially parallel over a substantial distance to and including the outlet orifice of the head box and are spaced a predetermined distance apart. Prior to any substantial formation of a web, the suspension leaves the orifice entrained between the fabrics and moves at the same speed and in the same direction. Thereafter a web of the papermaking fibers is formed by removing water from the suspension through the forming carrier without exerting substantial shear forces upon the forming web.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 216 words
In a papermaking machine, the combination of walls defining a chamber having an inlet for admitting a suspension of papermaking fibers and an outlet orifice for discharging the suspension, with an exit passageway within said chamber leading to said orifice and formed by a pair of said walls, said pair of walls having respective facing surfaces which are substantially impervious and which are substantially parallel to each other over a substantial distance and spaced a predetermined distance apart up to and including said orifice; a pair of endless fabrics, at least one of which is a foraminous forming carrier; means for supporting said endless fabrics for movement over respective paths into said chamber, through said passageway over respective ones of said surfaces, and out of said orifice; means for moving said fabrics over said paths at substantially the same speed; and means downstream from said orifice for removing fluid from the suspension through said forming fabric to form a web of papermaking fibers thereon, said pair of walls being shaped to cause the entire flow of suspension to move from the orifice uniformly at the speed of said fabrics prior to any substantial formation of the web so that the fluid may be removed from the suspension without exerting substantial shear forces upon the forming web.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 216 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 45 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said fabrics enter said chamber at points where the cross-sectional area of flow through said chamber is many times the cross-sectional area of the orifice and wherein said pairs of walls converge from said points to said parallel surfaces.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 47 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said fabrics leave said orifice substantially horizontally with the lower fabric being a foraminous forming carrier and wherein said means for supporting the upper fabric directs the upper fabric away from the lower fabric directly after both fabrics leave the orifice.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 32 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein both of said pair of endless fabrics are foraminous forming carriers, whereby water may be removed from both sides of said entrained suspension and resulting web.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 19 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 having means defining a plurality of inlets to said chamber for admitting respective suspensions.
