Abstract
Abstract A substantially all-carbon planar structure is provided which comprises essentially continues carbon fibers in a carbonaceous matrix. The fibers in the region adjacent to the periphery of the structure are ordered in a direction which substantially follows the contour of the periphery thereby providing increased strength against stresses in the region adjacent to the periphery. The fibers in the remainder of the structure may or may not be ordered.
