Abstract

Abstract A plurality of separate pneumatically operated actuators disposed in aligned and abutting relation to provide a linear positioning unit having opposed ends with each actuator being individually operable to linearly extend itself when actuated and thereafter to linearly collapse itself when actuated and thereafter to linearly collapse itself when deactuated whereby one end of the unit will be correspondingly linearly extended relative to the other end thereof and thereafter be linearly collapsed relative to the other end thereof. A control device being operatively interconnected to the one end of the positioning unit to be controlled in relation to the position of the one end relative to the other end thereof and control means for directing a source of pneumatic fluid to at least one of the actuators to extend the one end of the unit by the degree of actuation of the one actuator and for thereafter disconnecting the source from that one actuator to collapse the one end of the unit by the degree of deactuation of the one actuator.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 148 words
A pneumatic digital positioning apparatus comprising a tubular housing means having opposed ends, and a plurality of pneumatically operated linearly extendible and collapsible actuators disposed in aligned relation in said tubular housing means to provide a linear positioning unit having opposed ends one of which is disposed against one of said ends of said housing means and the other of which is disposed spaced from the other end of said housing means, and a dashpot means disposed between said other end of said unit and said other end of said housing means, said dashpot means comprising a cylinder and piston arrangement with said piston being fixed from movement at said other end of said housing means and said cylinder being operatively associated with said other end of said unit to tend to move in unison therewith, said cylinder of said dashpot means having a control device interconnecting means.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 148 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
A pneumatic positioning apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein each of said actuators comprises a piston and cylinder arrangement.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 50 words
A pneumatic positioning apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein the cylinder of each actuator has a cross-sectional configuration similar to the cross-sectional configuration of said housing means so as to be guided in its movement relative to said housing means by the interior surface of said housing means.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 41 words
A pneumatic positioning apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein each actuator is separate from the other actuators and has its piston abutting the cylinder of the next adjacent actuator except for the actuator at one end of said unit.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
A pneumatic positioning apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein at least one of said actuators has a linear extension stroke different from the linear extension stroke of another of said actuators.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 28 words
A pneumatic positioning apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein at least one of said actuators has means for adjusting the length of its fully extended stroke.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 37 words
A pneumatic positioning apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein means is carried by said housing means and is operatively interconnected to said unit to normally tend to maintain said actuators in their fully collapsed conditions.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 17 words
A pneumatic positioning apparatus as set forth in claim 7 wherein said last-named meaNs comprises spring means.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 65 words
A pneumatic positioning apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein a tension spring has one end interconnected to said housing means and the other end thereof interconnected to said cylinder of said dashpot means to tend to maintain said cylinder in engagement with said other end of said unit and to thereby tend to maintain all of said actuators in their fully collapsed conditions.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 130 words
A pneumatic positioning apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein each actuator comprises a pair of cup-shaped housing members respectively having their open ends adjustably secured together in threaded telescoping relation to define a cavity between their respective closed ends, and a piston member slidably disposed in the open end of one of said housing members to define a chamber between said piston member and said closed end of said one housing member, the other housing member having an opening through its said closed end in communication with said cavity, said piston member having an extension projecting through said opening to engage a next adjacent actuator whereby the stroke of the respective actuator is determined by said piston member abutting against the respective closed ends of said housing members.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 38 words
A pneumatic positioning apparatus as set forth in claim 10 wherein holding means is carried by one of said housing members of each actuator to secure the respective housing members together in the desired adjusted telescoping relation thereof.
