Abstract BENEFICIATION OF A TITANIFEROUS ORE IN WHICH THE IRON OXIDE PRESENT IN THE ORE IS REDUCED TO A FORM SUCH THAT IT CAN BE REMOVED BY LEACHING, FOR EXAMPLE, WITH A DILUTE ACID AND AFTER LEACHING, CHLORINATING THE ORE UNDER SUCH CONDITIONS THAT ANY REMANING IRON AND OTHER CHLORINATABLE IMPURTIES ARE CONVERTED TO VOLATILE CHLORIDES WITHOUT CHLORINATING TO ANY SUBSTANTIAL EXTENT THE TITANIUM DIXOIDE IN THE ORE. THE VOLATILE CHLORIDES ARE REMOVED FROM THE TREATED ORE TO PRODUCE AND ENRICHED ORE HAVING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF NATURALLY OCCURING MINERAL RUTILE.
