Abstract

Abstract Polyglycolic acid in shaped form (i.e., a suture) which is substantially free from vaporizable impurities is provided which has significantly greater in-vivo strength retention than shaped polyglycolic acid containing said vaporizable impurities. The improved polyglycolic acid is prepared by vacuum heating shaped polyglycolic acid containing vaporizable impurities to vaporize the impurities therefrom, and then removing the vaporized impurities from the polyglycolic acid. An apparatus for conveniently carrying out the above process is also provided.
