Abstract
Abstract An alkyl sulfonyl chloride is prepared continuously in high yield by reacting an alkyl mercaptan or dialkyl disulfide having one to 20 carbon atoms in the alkyl group with chlorine in a medium comprising aqueous concentrated HCl solution, in a reaction zone free of mechanical agitation means, at such feed rates that the reaction creates a turbulent condition in the reaction zone, and passing the medium into a contiguous product separation zone wherein the alkyl sulfonyl chloride is separated and withdrawn from the aqueous medium.
