Abstract CHEMICAL EFFUENT WASTE GASES FROM CHEMICAL PLANTS, PARTICULARLY EFFUENT WASTE GASES FROM PHTHALIC ANHYDRIDE AND MALEIC ANHYDRIDE PLANTS, ARE EFFECTIVELY WATER WASHED OF RESIDUAL ORGANIC MATTER (98 TO 99% REMOVAL) IN A WET SCRUBBER USING RECYCLED WATER TO CONCENTRATE THE ORGANIC POLLUTANTS IN THE SCRUBBER LIQUOR. A CONCENTRATED LIQUID PURGE (BLOWDOWN) FROM THE SCRUBBER RECYCLE CIRCULATING LOOP IS DIRECTED TO A THERMAL INCENERATOR WHERE THE PURGE IS VAPORIZED AND THE ORGANIC POLLUTANTS ARE OXIDIZED TO NON-POLLUTANT PRODUCTS.
