Abstract

Abstract In accordance with certain of its aspects, this invention relates to a novel apparatus and to the process for treating a bath containing trivalent chromium to convert said trivalent chromium to hexavalent chromium which comprises maintaining in said bath an electrolyzing cathode of predetermined area, the surface of which is in intimate electrical contact with a material in a low hydrogen overvoltage state selected from the group consisting of etched iron compound, platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, and nickel; maintaining in said bath an electrolyzing anode having a surface area at least equal to the area of said cathode; and electrolyzing said bath between said electrolyzing cathode and said electrolyzing anode at an electrolyzing anode current density of at least 0.3 amperes per square decimeter whereby said trivalent chromium in said bath is converted to said hexavalent chromium.
