Abstract Compositions comprising a synthetic ester hydraulic fluid and a small amount of water exhibit the ability and control damage to mechanical members in contact with said compositions. The compositions have many uses, among which are their use as hydraulic fluids.

wherein R7 and R10 are each an alkyl group containing from three to 10 carbon atoms R8 and R9 are each an alkylene group containing from two to 12 carbon atoms, x is a whole number having a value of 1 to about 80 or more and B. a damage inhibiting amount of water in the range of from 0.2 to 5 volume percent. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein R and R2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups containing from two to 18 carbon atoms.
