Abstract

Abstract Apparatus for drying or heating a continuous length element, and more particularly a drying apparatus in a machine for impregnating such fiber with a liquid fiber-to-rubber adhesive coating in the manufacture of tires, belting and similar products, wherein the element is rapidly dried at a controlled temperature by flame generated infrared type heating means while (1) an adjustable shielding means controls heat flow from the heating means to the element, and/or (2) moving a gas stream rapidly over the surface of the element and shielding means to protect the heating means from the flowing gas stream against any adverse effect on the infrared radiation from the heating means and to remove heat products from the shielding means and element. The foregoing abstract is not to be taken as limiting the invention of this application, and in order to understand the full nature and extent of the technical disclosure of this application, reference must be made to the accompanying drawings and the following detailed description.

Claim 2
Independent Claim 103 words
An apparatus for heating fibers in yarn or fabric in a continuous length element comprising: a. at least one heater for emitting infrared radiation; b. means for moving a fiber element in heat exchange relation past the heater; c. a shield disposed in fixed heat shielding relation between the heater and fiber element during normal operation of the heater for heating said element, the shield having at least one aperture through which infrared radiation passes through the shield for contacting the element; and d. means for adjusting the size of the aperture in the shield to regulate infrared radiation passing through the apeRture.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the heater is gas-fired and has an exposed flame adjacent the shield.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 30 words
The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the shield includes: e. a shutter with an aperture; and f. a plurality of slats mounted in the aperture for rotation about parallel axes.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the aperture adjusting means (d) includes means for rotating the slats in unison to arcuately position the slats about their rotational axes.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 49 words
The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the slats are movable from a fully open position where the slats are in parallel planes normal to the plane of the shutter, to a closed position where the slats are in abutting, generally aligned relation parallel to the plane of the shutter.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 30 words
The apparatus of claim 5, which includes means for moving the heater along an axis normal to the plane of the shutter and in a direction away from the shutter.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 22 words
The apparatus of claim 5, which includes means for discharging gas, under pressure, into the space between the fiber element and shutter.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the gas is discharged into said space in contacting, parallel relation to the fiber element.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 34 words
The apparatus of claim 8, which includes means for exhausting at least a portion of the gas after the gas removes a portion of the heat products generated by infrared radiation from the heater.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 140 words
An apparatus for heating fibers in yarn or fabric in a continuous length element, comprising: a. a plurality of gas-fired heaters disposed in stacked generally aligned relation one above the other, said heaters each having an exposed flame for generating infrared radiation; b. a gas discharge and exhaust disposed between adjacent heaters; c. means for moving a fiber element in heat receiving relation past the exposed flames of the heaters; d. a shutter disposed in fixed heat shielding relation between the fiber element and exposed flames of each heater during normal operation of the heater for heating the fiber element, the shutter having at least one aperture through which infrared radiation passes through the shutter for contrasting the element; and e. means for adjusting the size of the aperture in each shutter to regulate infrared radiation passing through the aperture.
