Abstract

Abstract In a hose coupling having an extruded stem and an extruded collet which are joined so hydraulic hose can be clamped against the stem by the collet''s gripping fingers when the hose is inserted therebetween, a mechanical connection between the stem and collet is effected by expanding a midportion of the stem into the peripheral dentured and grooved wall of an aperture in a radial flange forming part of the collet. The method of expanding the midportion of the stem and the configuration of dentured and grooved wall of the aperture insures a suitable mechanical joint between the stem and collet for a coupling operating at 4500 p.s.i. or above.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim 261 words
A hose coupling comprising: a hollow extruded tubular stem having a head at one end and a nipple portion at the other end; a hollow cylindrical extruded collet having an inwardly projecting radial flange at one end and a plurality of longitudinal slots extending from said radial flange to its opposite end dividing it into a plurality of gripping fingers, said flange having an aperture with a circular wall concentric with the longitudinal axis of said collet, said collet telescoped on said stem so its aperture is contiguous to a central portion of said stem and its gripping fingers surround said nipple portion of said stem and being coextensive therewith; said circular wall of said aperture having a circumferential groove in its central portion dividing it into two parallel spaced-apart circular surfaces, said circular surfaces having surface denticulations with their longitudinal axes skewed from 20* to 40* with reference to the longitudinal axis of said collet; a central wall portion of said central portion of said stem which extends through said aperture expanded outwardly to engage the grooved and denticulated configuration of said circular wall of said aperture and overlap both faces of said radial flange about the periphery of said aperture whereby a mechanical joint between said stem and said collet is achieved which is capable of functioning at high pressures without failure; and a hollow swaging sleeve having a bore operable to drive the gripping fingers toward the nipple portion of the stem when the hose coupling is connected to rubber hose and said swaging sleeve is assembled thereon.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 261 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 36 words
The hose coupling as defined in claim 1 wherein the denticulations on the wall on opposite sides of the circumferential groove are skewed opposite to one another with reference to the longitudinal axis of the collet.
