Abstract AN OPTICAL SYSTEM FOR READING MARKS ON A DOCUMENT. EACH MARK AREA IS SCANNED BY A BEAM IN A RASTER PATTERN. THE NUMBER OF TIMES WHICH A MARK IS ENCOUNTERED DURING THE RASTER PATERN SCAN OF A MARK AREA PROVIDES AN INDICATION OF THE EXISTENCE OF A MARK AND THE STRENGTH OF THE EXISTING MARK. ORIENTATION FOR THE RASER PATTERN SCANS IS PROVIDED BY A TIMING MARK ASSOCIATED WITH A LINE OF MARK AREAS.
