Abstract

Abstract Electrically conductive foil strips for producing a magnetic field for use in a generator motor or the like and more particularly an armature with an alternating current impressed thereon which is adapted to move in an enclosure containing liquid nitrogen at cryogenic temperatures. At least one of the edges of the strips is in engagement with the liquid nitrogen for cooling purposes. The strips may be arranged in an undulating fashion or in coils and for damping purposes preferably two adjacent strips are wound together with the end of one of such strips being connected to the beginning of the other to give a continuous circuit. Where two of the foil strips cross they are twisted 90* so that they cross in substantially the same plane.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 113 words
Magnetic field producing means for use in a generator, motor, or the like, which comprises electrically superconductive tape means which is flexible at room temperature and is wound in a contacting face-to-face relationship, a fluid maintained at cryogenic temperatures moving relative to said superconductive means, there being (a) an efficient heat conductive transfer portion for each of said superconductive means in a relative moving engagement through said fluid, whereby each of said superconductive means is directly cooled by said fluid, and stabIlizing means associated with each of said superconductive means adapted to reduce transient internal voltages generated by changes in magnetic flux in said superconductive means and prevent same from being driven normal.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 113 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 43 words
Magnetic field producing means in accordance with claim 1 wherein said superconductive means comprise tape strips each covered with a thermally conductive metal, at least one edge of each of said strips having said conductive metal in relative moving engagement with said fluid.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 14 words
Magnetic field producing means in accordance with claim 2 wherein said strips are undulated.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
Magnetic field producing means in accordance with claim 2 wherein said strips are formed in coils.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 55 words
Magnetic field producing means in accordance with claim 1 wherein said stabilizing means comprises a conductive metal substantially covering each of said superconductive means and adapted to provide a normal circuit around the sides of said strips whereby transient internal voltage generated in said superconductive means is damped to prevent same from being driven normal.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 16 words
Magnetic field producing means in accordance with claim 5 wherein said superconductive means carry alternating current.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 60 words
Means for producing magnetic flux which comprises at least two foil strips which cross in substantially the same plane, said strips being substantially perpendicular to said plane in locations other than the location where they cross, said strips, making a substantially 90* turn at the location where they cross and being substantially parallel to said plane at said latter location.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 60 words
Means for producing magnetic flux which comprises at least two foil strips which cross in substantially the same plane, said strips being substantially perpendicular to said plane in locations other than the location where they cross, said strips, making a substantially 90* turn at the location where they cross and being substantially parallel to said plane at said latter location.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 40 words
Means for producing a magnetic flux in accordance with claim 7 wherein said strips are wound together, the end of one of said strips being connected to the beginning of the other of said strips to provide a continuous circuit.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 63 words
For use in a system for cooling magnetic flux producing means, in a cryogenic environment, a plurality of stacked electrical conducting foil strips of like dimensions, which are composed of material which is flexible at room temperature, said strips being stacked in contacting echelon with intervening insulation and with an area near the edge of each strip being exposed to said cryogenic environment.
Claim 12
