Abstract SOLID ORGANIC POLYMERS NORMALLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO BURNING ARE RENDERED SELF-EXTINGUISHING BY INCORPORATING THEREIN A BROMINATED ARYLIDENE KETONE SUCH AS A BROMINATED BENZILIDENE OR CINNAMILIDENE KETONE; FOR EXAMPLE, 1,5-DIPHENYL-1,2,4,5-TETRABROMO-3 - PENTANONE. THE SELF-EXTINGUISHING AGENTS USEFUL IN THE INVENTION ARE UNEXPECTEDLY STABLE TO HYDROLYSIS, YET ARE HIGHLY REACTIVE AS SELF-EXTINGUISHING AGENTS.
