Abstract
Abstract ION-EXCHANGED CATALYSTS ARE PREPARED BY FIRST EXCHANGING HYDROGEN ATOMS ON AN OXIDE SUPPORT WITH ALKALINE CATIONS, AND THEN EXCHANGING THE ALKALINE CATIONS WITH CATIONS HAVING POTENTIAL CATALYTIC ACTIVITY. THE METHOD IS PARTICULARLY SUITABLE FOR SUPPORTS WITHOUT STRONG PROTONS (E.G. SILICA) AND THE PREFERRED CATIONS HAVING CATALYTIC ACTIVITY ARE NICKEL IONS. THE CATIONS OF E.G. NICKEL MAY BE SUBSEQUENTLY REDUCED TO THE ELEMENTAL METAL.
