Abstract AN APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE SIZE AND SHAPE OF SMALL PARTICLES. LIGHT SCATTERED BY EACH PARTICLE IS FOCUSED TO FORM AN IMAGE; A PHOTOMULTIPLIER THEN CONVERTS THE LIGHT INTO A PULSE OF CURRENT THAT VARIES WITH SIZE OF THE PARTICLE. THE SIZE AND SHAPE OF THE IMAGE CAN BE MEASURED MECHANICALLY WITH SLIT GATES. A DECREASE IN THE VOLTAGE GENERATED BY THE PARTICLES RESULTS WHEN THE SLIT GATES CONTACT THE IMAGE.
