Abstract A LAP FORMING APPARATUS IN WHICH LOOSE FIBERS ARE STUFFED INTO AN ENCLOSURE BY STUFFING ROLLS WHICH ARE DRIVEN BY A VARIABLE SPEED MOTOR. THE FIBERS ARE DRAWN FROM THE OTHER END OF THE ENCLOSURE AND FORMED INTO A LAP. UNIFORMITY OF THE LAP IS CONTROLLED BY MEASURING THE AVERAGE DENSITY OF THE FIBERS IN THE ENCLSOURE BY PHOTOELECTRIC MEANS. VARIATIONS IN THE FIBER DENSITY PRODUCE A SIGNAL TO CONTROL THE VARIABLE SPEED MOTOR AND THUS VARY THE RATE AT WHICH FIBERS ARE STUFFED INTO THE ENCLOSURE TO MAINTAIN UNIFORM FIBER DENSITY.
