Abstract MEASUREMENT OF THE DEGREE OF FOCUS OF AN IMAGE WHEREIN A PAIR OF LIGHT SENSITIVE ELEMENTS ARE EXPOSED TO THE IMAGE. IN A FIRST EMBODIMENT, A PAIR OF PHOTOCONDUCTIVE ELEMENTS ARE PHYSICALLY POSITIONED IN DIFFERENT FOCAL PLANES WHILE, IN A SECOND EMBODIMENT, A LIGHT DIFFUSING MEDIUM IS ASSOCIATED WITH ONE OF A PAIR OF PHOTOSENSITIVE ELEMENTS WHEREBY THAT ELEMENT WILL RECEIVE ONLY AVERAGE OR BACKGROUND ILLUMINATION. IN BOTH EMBODIMENTS, AS THE DEGREE OF FOCUS OF IMAGE IS VARIED, AN ELECTRICAL OUTPUT SIGNAL COMMENSURATE WITH FOCUS WILL BE GENERATED.
