Abstract A FOCUS COIL ASSEMBLY COMPRISES FOUR INTERWINED HELICES SURROUNDING AN ELECTRON BEAM TO-BE-FOCUSED. OPPOSITELY DIRECTED CURRENTS IN ADJACENT HELICES PRODUCE A CONTINUOUS AND DISTRIBUTED QUADRUPOLE MAGNETIC FOCUSING FIELD. FIELD CONCENTRATION CAN BE ACHIEVED BY MEANS OF A MAGNETIC YOKE SURROUNDING THE HELIX ASSEMBLY.
