Abstract VAPORIZATION OF SELECTED PORTIONS OF A THIN FILM OF BISMUTH BY EXPOUSURE TO A FOCUSED LASER BEAM IS USED TO RECORD INFORMATION. THE BISMUTH FILM, CARRIED ON AN APPROPRIATE SUBSTRATE, IS SANDWICHED BETWEEN A SUPPORTING LAYER OF AN EASILY VAPORIZABLE SUBSTANCE, AND A SUPERPOSED LAYER OF A SUBSTANCE WHICH DECREASES THE REFLECTIVITY OF THE BISMUTH FILM.
