Abstract
Abstract This disclosure relates to an apparatus for winding a strip of conductive material into a plurality of strip conductor coils at a predetermined location in the apparatus while securing two leads in side-by-side relation to the strip of conductive material in advance of the coil making location so that the strip can be separated between the two leads in order that one of the leads can form the outer lead on the coil being wound at the predetermined location and the other lead will form the inner lead on a subsequent coil that will be wound by the apparatus, the apparatus having a movable carriage carrying a pair of movable taping heads so that one of the taping heads can attach a length of tape to one end of the strip of conductive material and tape the same to a core on which the strip will be subsequently drawn and wound into coil form and the other taping head being utilized to secure the outer end of the strip of conductive material onto the coil being formed therefrom.

In an apparatus for winding strip conductor coils or the like having inner and outer leads connected thereto, means for winding a strip conductor from a supply roll onto a core with the inner end of said strip carrying said inner lead, means for cutting said strip between said core and said supply roll to form an outer end of said strip with an outer lead thereon, and means operatively interconnected to said winding means for operating said winding means so that the resulting coil will have a preselected number of turns thereon, said last-named means also being operatively interconnected to said cutting means for operating said cutting means so that the outer lead on the resulting coil will be positively located relative to the inner lead, said last-named means having means for compensating for variations in the cross-sectional thickness in said strip.

In an apparatus as set forth in claim 2, said means for applying said tension on said strip material as it is unwound from said supply roll comprising a first roller carried by one end of a first arm having the other end pivotally mounted to said apparatus, said strip being fed from said supply roll partly around said first roller, tension spring means having one end connected to said one end of said first arm, a second arm having one end pivotally mounted to said apparatus, and a member held for axial movement by said apparatus and having an end bearing against the outer periphery of said supply roll during the entire unwinding operation thereof, said second arm having the other end thereof interconnected to said member to be pivoted by said member as said supply roll is unwound, the other end of said spring being interconnected to said second arm whereby the tension force of said spring tending to pivot said first arm away from said supply roll decreases as set supply roll is unwound.
