Sole attaching with thermoplastic resin adhesive

Abstract 1281078 Boots &c BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 5 Sept 1969 [6 Sept 1968] 44052/69 Heading A3B A method of bonding an outsole 16 provided with a web of thermoplastic adhesive composition to the bottom of a lasted shoe upper 20 includes the steps of locating the outsole 16 in its correct position on the shoe bottom, separating the outsole and the shoe bottom, heating the adhesive, outsole 16 and shoe bottom, returning the outsole 16 to its original position and finally applying pressure to bond the outsole 16 to the lasted upper 20. The lasted upper 20 is supported by a last pin 26 and toe rest 28 on a plate 30 which is mounted on a ram 22. The outsole 16 which is provided with adhesive is then placed manually on the lasted upper 20 in its correct position. Suction cups 36, which are connected to a vacuum source are then lowered to grip the outsole and are then raised to separate the outside from the shoe bottom. An infra-red heating plate 38 is then moved between the outsole and shoe bottom to activate the adhesive and heat the outsole and shoe bottom. The plate 38 is then retracted and the suction cups 36 are lowered to return the outsole to the shoe bottom. Pressure member 40 which is connected to the piston rod 43 of cylinder 39 then applies light pressure and is retracted. The shoe support is then moved sideways to a position below a press pad 44 and the ram 22 is actuated to bond the outsole to the shoe bottom. The adhesive is preferably a polyester in the form of a web of randomly disposed filaments as described in Specification 1259661.
