Abstract

Abstract 1,107,904. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. A. NAKANO. 1 Dec., 1965 [4 Dec., 1964], No. 51075/65. Heading B5K. A thermoplastic tape or band bonding machine, Figs. 1-3 (all not shown), comprises a base-plate 1; a frame 2 fixed to the plate 1; a cylindrical member 3 provided on the upper surface of the frame 2; a shaft 5 rotatably inserted in apertures 4, 41 formed in the member 3; a two'-stepped cam 10 having lower and upper convex portions 7, 8, respectively, formed thereon so as to define a concave portion 9 therebetween, the cam 10 being secured to the centre of the shaft 5; a lever 6 mounted to the shaft 5 so as to project from the cam 10; a plunger 11, 13 adapted to be raised and lowered within the member 3; a pressing plate 15 secured to the lower end 13 of the plunger; a notch 16 formed in the member 3 below the aperture 4<SP>1</SP>, the lower end of the notch 16 being connected with a cavity 17 formed in the centre of the frame 2; a projection 18 projecting from the upper-end of the notch 16; a projection 19 projecting from the plunger 11, 13; a spring 20 interposed between the projections 18, 19 thereby always pulling the plunger 11, 13 upwardly; a disc-like cam 24 formed with a convex portion 22 defining a part of the circumference thereof and a flat portion 23 defining the other part of the circumference thereof, the cam 24 being fixed to that portion of the shaft 5 which projects out of the aperture 4; a shaft 26 projecting from the member 3 and rotatably supported between plates 25, 25<SP>1</SP>; a rod 27 secured to the shaft 26; a spring 29 wound on the shaft 26 and secured at one end to the plate 25 and the other end thereof being wound on the rod 27; a nail member 31 attached to the upper end of the rod 27, the member 31 being adapted to be always disposed in pressing contact with the cam 24; a bent plate 34 having the vertical portion thereof attached to the lower end of the rod 27; and a heating piece 37 secured to the horizontal portion of the plate 34. In operation, to fasten a thermoplastic band about an article or package, one end 45, Fig. 4 (not shown), of the band is passed over the plate 1 below the plate 15. The other portion is placed on a cradle 44, Fig. 1 (not shown), and a lever 39 is pushed to the right of Fig. 1 to rotate a disc 40 so that a knurled gear 43 rotatably mounted on the eccentric portion thereof presses the band against the cradle 44. Reciprocation of a lever 42 rotates the gear 43 step-wise anticlockwise to tension the band about the article or package. The band is then passed below the plate 15 and placed on a cutter 21, Figs. 1 and 2 (both not shown). The cam 10 is rotated by manipulation of the lever 6 so that the top portion 12 of the plunger 11, 13 is pushed by the cam portion 7 to lower the plunger 11, 13 and the plate 15, the edge of the plate 15 causing the band to be cut off from the supply by the cutter 21 to leave an end 45<SP>1</SP>. During the downward movement of the plate 15 the cam 24 is rotated by the shaft 5 so that the member 31 is pressed against the cam portion 22 to enable the rod 27 to be rotated about the shaft 26 against the spring 29 so that the heating piece 37 is moved between the ends 45, 45<SP>1</SP> of the band to be pressed therewith between the plates 1, 15, Fig. 5 (not shown). The plunger 11, 13 and the plate 15 are raised through the engagement of the plunger portion 12 with the cam portion 9. Simultaneously, the member 31 is pressed against the cam portion 23 through rotation of the cam 24 and the rod 27 is reversely rotated by the spring 29 so that the heating piece 37 is extracted from between the softened ends 45, 45<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 6 (not shown). The plunger 11, 13 is again lowered by the engagement of the cam portion 8 with the plunger portion 12 and, consequently, the plate 15 presses the ends 45, 45<SP>1</SP> into contact with the plate 1 to effect the bond, Fig. 7 (not shown). During this time, the rod 27 is not rotated since the member 31 still engages the cam portion 23. In modifications, the lever 6 is replaced by an electric motor to rotate the shaft 5, the heating piece 37 is moved by electrical or hydraulic means or the pressing plate 15 is moved with respect to the base-plate 1 by gears, air pressure, hydraulic or electrical means.
