THE METHOD OF OPERATING A SUBMERGED BLAST APPARATUS (SAID APPARATUS HAVING A PIPE SYSTEM INCLUDING A SUPPLY PIPE EXTENDING DOWNWARDLY TO A SUBSTANTIAL DEPTH IN A TANK, ORIFICES AT ONE LEVEL HAVING A TRANSVERSE DIMENSION OF THE ORDER OF AT LEAST ONE-EIGHTH INCH, COMMUNICATING WITH THE PIPE WITH A REGION OF UPWARD FLOW FROM THE PIPE TOWARD THE ORIFICES, AND A LOWER LEVEL BLOW-OFF OPENING) WHICH INCLUDES THE STEPS OF CAUSING A SUSTAINED BLAST THROUGH THE ORIFICES INTO A LIQUID-SOLIDS MIXTURE IN THE TANK BY SUPPLYING A GASEOUS MEDIUM THROUGH THE SUPPLY PIPE AT AN EFFECTIVE PRESSURE WHICH IS BETWEEN THE HYDROSTATIC HEADS IN THE TANK AT SAID TWO LEVELS, TEMPORARILY DISCONTINUING THE BLAST BY DISCONTINUING THE SUPPLY OF THE MEDIUM, LETTING THE LIQUID-SOLIDS MIXTURE IN THE TANK ENTER THE SUPPLY PIPE, AND RISE A SUBSTANTIAL HEIGHT THEREIN ABOVE THE ORIFICES TO THE LEVEL WITHIN THE TANK, MAINTAINING SAID
