IN THE METHOD OF BONDING REFRACTORY PARTICLES SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF DEAD-BURNED DOLOMITE, DEAD-BURNED MAGNESIA, AND MIXTURES THEREOF BY BLENDING SUCH PARTICLES WITH SUFFICIENT COAL TAR PITCH TO BIND SAID PARTICLES TOGETHER, SHAPING SUCH BLEND, AND THEN HEATING THE RESULTING SHAPE TO A TEMPERATURE SUFFICIENT TO DECOMPOSE PYROLYTICALLY THE PITCH AND FORM A CARBON BOND; THE IMPROVEMENT WHICH CONSISTS OF ADDING TO THE BLEND PRIOR TO HEATING FROM ABOUT 0.5 PERCENT TO ABOUT 10 PERCENT BY WEIGHT THEREOF FINELY DIVIDED CARBON BLACK.
