Liquid crystal display device
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE: To enable black and white display by providing at least one layer of an optically anisotropic body except a nematic liquid crystal between a pair of polarizing plates. CONSTITUTION: At least one layer of the optically anisotropic body 28 is provided except the nematic liquid crystal 24 between a pair of the polarizing plates 22 and 26. Natural light 21 constitutes the assemblage of linearly polarized light rays 231W233, etc., unified in the polarization direction upon passage through the linear polarizing plate 22 and attains the polarized states light 251W253 respectively when the natural light passes the inside of a liquid crystal layer 24. The optically anisotropic body 28 through which the light is passed acts to cancel the wavelength dispersion generated by the passage through a liquid crystal cell 24 and, therefore, 291W293 constitute the linearly polarized light rays having the oscillation directions in the same orientation as the orientation of 231W233. The linearly polarized light rays pass the linear polarizing plate 26 as they are and constitute 271W273 if the polarization axis direction of the linear polarizing plate 26 coincides with the oscillation direction of the polarized light rays 291W293. The perfect black and white display is thereby executed. COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO&Japio
