Tube covered optical fiber and its production
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To obviate the generation of a fiber rupture against tension and bending during use of an optical fiber by generating a compressive strain in the optical fiber by a tube covering provided around the optical fiber thereby maintaining the fiber. CONSTITUTION:A stage for providing the heat shrinkable tube covering 7 around the optical fiber 3 which is bare or has a thin covering and a stage for impressing the compressive strain to the optical fiber 3 by heating the tube covering 7 are provided. The product of the sectional area and Young's modulus of the tube covering 7 applied on the optical fiber 3 is determined larger than the product of the sectional area and Young's modulus of the optical fiber 3. Since the optical fiber 3 has, for example, >=1% compressive strain in the axial direction thereof, such elongation strain by which the compressive strain applied to the optical fiber is offset is permitted. The elongation strain larger than the elongation strain which can be assured by the conventional proof test is, therefore, permitted. The generation of the fiber rupture against the tension and bending generated during the use of the optical fiber 3 is thereby obviated.
