Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To enable the coupling of a part to constitute a core and a light guide in a tight contact state so that light transmission of high efficiency can be executed by positioning an optical fiber which is worked in the front end to a circular conical or hemispherical shape into the groove part of a substrate, which groove has a V-shaped section and has an inclined end part in the innermost. CONSTITUTION:The groove 12 having the V-shaped section is formed on the surface of the optical integrated circuit substrate 10 consisting of a glass material or lithium niobate and the slope of the angle corresponding to the tip angle of a pyramidal tool is formed in the innermost part 12a of the V-groove 12. The front of the optical fiber 14 is then worked to the circular conical or hemispherical shape and the core end part 14a thereof is fixed in the state of directing the same to the sloped end part 12a of the V-groove 12. The core end 14a of the optical fiber 14 can, therefore, be directed to the open end 16a of the light guide 16 in the substrate 10 in tight contact therewith. The spacing between the optical fiber 14 and the light guide 16 is thereby eliminated and the loss by the dispersion of light is effectively suppressed, by which the high light transmission efficiency is obtd.
