Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To prevent the lowering of a data transfer rate by providing a controlling means which jumps a defective sector and turns to a next normal sector when a head accesses the defective sector, and after the access of the sectors is finished wholly executes defect processing from the defective sector to a substituting sector, and rearranges access data. CONSTITUTION:Sixteen sectors are provided on one track of a magnetic storage surface, and it is assumed that the fourteen sectors among them are the normal sectors No.0-13 and the two are the substituting sectors S0, S1, and it is assumed that a transfer request is given to the twelve consecutive sectors No.1-12 from a host computer side. At this time, a high speed processor 25 stores a sector number in a memory, but it is blank because substitution is unknown. Here, after allowing a driver to seek the head, shifting the head to the aimed track, reads a sector address and waits the sector No.1 along the rotation of a magnetic disk, reads data and checks the presence of the defect of the sector when the head arrives, and if no defect, stores the data in an FIFO memory 22.
